Functions
Iodine aids in the development and functioning of the thyroid gland. It is an important part of thyroxine, which promotes growth and development, regulates cellular oxidation, stimulates metabolism, and influences cell differentiation and protein synthesis.
Thyroid disorders such as hyperthyroidism and goiter are the possible effects of iodine deficiency. Symptoms include irritability, nervousness, dry hair and skin, cold hands and feet, and obesity. If deficiency is present during gestation, cretinism (physical and mental retardation) can occur. Clinical Uses Iodine is used mainly to treat the symptoms of and insure against iodine deficiency.

Iodine is considered to be non-toxic.
Recommended Dosage
The recommended daily intake of iodine is 150 mcg.
